The colorant used in the manufacture of beverages such as “Coca Cola” and “Pepsi” can cause lung cancer, liver cancer, thyroid cancer and leukemia, according to experts from the Center of Science for Public Interest (CSPI) and activists of healthy lifestyle movement.
It was reported that experts from the University of California conducted a study on popular beverages and found out that the colorant, which gives the drink that dark brown color, which producers call “caramel”, has actually nothing to do with real caramel. The so-called “caramel” is a result of a complex chemical reaction between sugar, ammonia, and sulfite. As a result of this reaction two carcinogen: 2-MEI and 4-MEI are formed in the colorant.
Several experiments on mice showed that these substances lead to the development of lung cancer, leukemia and liver cancer.
It was also reported that this dangerous components in large amount were found in five different products of the company “Coca-Cola.” Therefore, activists demand an immediate ban on the use of the artificial colorant in “Coca-Cola” and “Pepsi” drinks.
The opinion of activists is also supported by American oncologists.
